Wind Mitigation

Wind Mitigation Inspections That Save You Money

Florida law requires insurers to offer premium discounts for homes with documented hurricane-resistant features. We document them.

Why It Matters

Florida Wind Mitigation Requirements

Florida statute requires every property insurance carrier writing wind coverage in the state to offer premium discounts to homeowners whose homes include hurricane-mitigating construction features. The catch: the carrier doesn't have to find those features—you have to document them.

A wind mitigation inspection (Uniform Mitigation Verification Inspection Form OIR-B1-1802) is a one-page report your inspector completes that tells your insurer exactly which credits to apply. The savings can be substantial—homeowners frequently report 20–60% reductions in their wind premium portion after submitting a wind mit report.

The inspection takes about 45 minutes, costs a fraction of the typical annual savings, and remains valid for five years. For most Florida homeowners, it's the highest-ROI inspection they'll ever pay for.

What We Document

Seven Features That Earn Credits

Roof Covering Evaluation

We document the roof material, year installed, and whether it meets the Florida Building Code 2001 or later wind-uplift standards. FBC-compliant roofs receive significant credits.

Roof Deck Attachment

Nail spacing on the roof sheathing has an enormous impact on uplift resistance. We measure spacing in the attic and document fastener type (nails vs. staples).

Roof-to-Wall Connections

Toe nails, clips, single wraps, and double wraps each carry different credits. We photograph and identify the connection type in multiple locations.

Roof Geometry

Hip roofs distribute wind load far better than gable roofs and qualify for a meaningful credit when at least 90% of the roof is hip-shaped.

Secondary Water Resistance (SWR)

A self-adhering membrane or peel-and-stick underlayment can stop water intrusion even if the primary roof covering fails during a storm. We confirm presence and type.

Opening Protection

Hurricane-rated windows, doors, garage doors, and storm shutters protect against debris impact. We document the rating of every opening in the home.
